Veritas – Dark Ages

The duo Veritas have just released their latest track Dark Ages, which is taken from their upcoming, as yet untitled debut album.

The duo consists of two emcees/producers/songwriters, Epik from Cabra in Dublin and Exile from the Curragh in Kildare. They have been working together for a few years but formed the group about a year ago and named it Veritas; the Latin word for truth, since that's the style of content that they deliver...real happenings and real situations. They have not really collaborated on any major releases here yet, although they have some top Irish names lined up for their upcoming album.

The track is all original with no samples used aside from the media clips. It begins with an eerie darkened piano melody that is layered with a scaled, low end violin sound with a late delay that adds to the darkness of the track. The quick paced but low decibelled hi-hats keep a timing that creeps through the background. A soft but constant rolling bassline crawls under the track as it lifts the emotion on this dark, eerie and society pitted number. This makes way for Exile to come in and lay his truth filled verse on social issues..done with a stern, solid, storytelling vibe while making use of a paced syllable style, delivered with the effect of a syringe cutting the skin direct to the vein of the issues.

Wouldn't have to look too far to find a mother in her kitchen

Thinkin bout how she's gona trick the doctor for prescriptions

The life she has is not the life she planned out for her children

Gettin phone-calls from the State, to say her son just died in prison

The hook is a combined drop by both guys as they lace it with snippets from the media speaking on the state of the nation and the level of crime and violence. They capture the whole feel of the track here as they match the beat with their message on the state of the nation

This is the dark ages, an invasion.

Waking up to see the same shit on a daily basis

Epik drops in on the last verse with his own take on the gritty underworld and the search for escape and hope in the wrong places. Working the beat, again delivering his message with the most impact as possible, he drops a slow paced syllable and couplet rhyming verse that surgically cuts the air with the scent of desperation and neglect, telling the story of negative success.

since his little sister's death ya it's been a dark mess

Cold and got heartless a lost soul strollin, midnight roads life is lookin hopeless

his only aim is to keep focussed on profit, feed the streets with his product, boys will bleed if they breach honour

I personally really like this track, the emotion created by the simple but mood enhancing melodies of the strings and piano driven by the crawling beat and underlying bass enhances the stories the lads drop with their verses. Also the fact they produced the track themselves gives them that extra power to work it and they do just that. Production wise they have created the dark tales in the music and with their pain and life struggled verses on top it has just fused the music with the vocals....really well captured.

Veritas are working on the album and hope to have it drop sometime soon and will have some guest spots from some of the Working Class crew as well as others. They have also set up their record label, Elite Wreckords and will be organising some new additions to this in the coming months along with some new releases.
