  • The Delta Boys – Special Delivery

Shakey and Colltrane got together around June of this year and formed the group The Delta Boys and this is their first release, the mixtape Special Delivery.

Shakey, from Wexford has released two mixtapes in the past, 2007s This Is Me and in 2008 he released Keep On Keepin On. He is probably best known for his track Irish Party and has upcoming releases with Redzer, Siyo and Rob Steenson to name but a few. Colltrane is a young eighteen year old emcee/producer from Listowel in Kerry. He has released three mixtapes to date, Lights and Aries were both released in 2010 and in May of this year he released Lights(The Demo). Only new on the scene here, Colltrane is just beginning to get his name out there.

This is a ten track mixtape that starts with the Drake ft Jay-Z track Light Up which is produced by Noah “40” Shabib and Tone Mason. It gives a nice entry to the mixtape as the airy beat loosens you into the music as Colltrane drops in with a strong stance and fires his 1st bars

Its just a thought, what if we never fought

What if you found me even though Im Jack Shepard Lost

Like I have no reputation cos my credits gone

But fuck it since your gone I think I’m better off

The tape progresses with some more commercial type tracks like Lil Wayne’s 6ft 7ft, Kanye West’s Power and Kanye & Jay-Z’s Otis to name just a few but for me the real banger on here and to which I truly hold the most respect is the final track, their rendition of Tinchy Stryder’s Game Over. The Delta Boys have landed some top heads on here and the energy is savage and progressive from start to finish. They have pulled in Mango, Tha Duke, Murka, Rob Steenson and Mr. HighSpeed to deliver verses and this track has an electric charge that stimulates and fires the nodes in your brain. This track sees Shakey get a bit more aggressive as he goes from a single rapping flow, then upping his pace to catch and push the energy for the track

Blacked out shades so u cant see my red eyes

Doin’ the girls in the toilet like I’m in the mile high

    I blast off like a mother-fuckin rocket

Cos when I do that, there is no stoppin’…..me

This mixtape takes a very commercial approach with the tracks that are used and so if thats not your thing then you will probably find it hard to lock into this one. But on the other hand if Kanye, Weezy, Drake and Ace Hood type tracks are your listening pleasure then you’ll slide right into this.

Shakey and Colltrane both have a similar style and so have chosen tracks to suit just that. Your not going to get complicated rhyming styles on here but at least they embrace that and just deliver on the tracks with high energy and some decent couplets interlaced with some clever similes and metaphors.

The Delta Boys wanted to use this mixtape with well known tracks to introduce themselves but they have already started on their next project which will be a body of all original tracks. They are also both working on some original solo projects at the moment too so you can expect to hear more from Shakey, Colltrane and The Delta Boys.

    The mixtape Special Delivery can be downloaded for free from the 23rd of December and you can check out the guys facebook and  reverbnation pages on;

  • G.S.C. ft Rob Kelly – Spite

Irish American rap group G.S.C. teamed up with Irish heavy-weight, Rob Kelly back in 2010 and the track Spite was the outcome.

Although G.S.C. are a Southern American group, there roots are solidly Irish and with Wexford’s Rob Kelly featuring it’s only right to take a look at the track. G.S.C. are from Northern Georgia and were formed roughly around 2006. The group consists of two brothers, Young Jay and Danny O’ Moore and there hype man BoGutta. The group got a rapid start and burst onto their local HipHop scene performing at showcases and being featured on some major mixtapes from the Legion Of Doom. They also opened for acts such as the Ying Yang Twins, JT Money and Kilo. Their own Irish roots hail from Co. Offaly and Co. Down and the group are managed by Kevin Gorman from Tallaght in Dublin. They are also part of another group, Boondock Kingz, which consists of G.S.C. and Kuntry Strong, an Albany New York native and whom together have a more alternative HipHop sound.

The track itself was produced by Lava Boi and Gassalean of Beatin Off Productions, who have produced for Da Arsonists and Gorilla Zoe to name just a few. It begins with a stiff, short key sample repeated in a tight rhythm, then the beat drops with a hard, tight kick drum and snappy clap. A light rhythmic hi-hat keeps the time as a splashy cymbal crashes on the drop. The track is light and not over produced leaving space for the rhyme to shine. Rob Kelly comes in first delivering that flawless flow with well crafted, witty bars

I’m a heavy metal star, Billy Idol, Mony Mony,

you hang around with coppers like Jonsey and Mahoney

and Hooks and Hightower, you shook off my power

I’m the king of the castle, your stuck in my tower

The track ebbs along nicely with a snappy musical flow that keeps you nodding your head along to the beat. G.S.C., although not as complicated with their rhymes as Kells, do bring solid rhymes and their trademark Southern swag to the track. The change in accent and style gives Danny an energy as he launches in on verse two bringing that swag and holding that clean snappy flow as he addresses the over-hyped artists in the game

Got a major deal shawty, but you overrated

Gotta hit in the burbs but the hood made it

You crazy, use your head be for real

Say you run it but all I see is standing still

The lightness of the track, mixed with the edgy use of the sample and the catchy sound carries an undeniable bop to the track that gets you eager for each verse to drop. Young Jay comes in for the last verse to lay his grimy style on the track but keeping those clear, paced couplets on the beat

Get big, go make another record

you better fly high if you low you get wet up

but get this, we been raw for too long

no recognition up n down like a see saw

Although the track was released back in 2010 it was never really promoted and so never received the attention it deserved. Although the content of the verses might not blow you away as far as complicated or subliminal styles, they do hold a tightness to them and a solid flow and this track is just that; a sharp HipHop track that has a solid beat as an underlay and laced with three tight snappy verses over the top. It’s nice to hear the mix up of the Irish verse with the Southern twang of our American cousins and it works real well giving each an energy to their verses as they drop in.

G.S.C. are really holding their Irish connections well, collaborating with a lot of our well known artists. They have done tracks with Terawrizt, Gerard i2 and Mr. Mills. At the moment they are working on a Boondock Kingz mixtape and have a G.S.C. mixtape, Hwy 985 Vol.1 coming in January 2012. They have also got plenty more Irish collaborations in the works too so watch this space.

  • Rob Kelly ft Selah – Game Over

Well known Irish emcee Rob Kelly has just released his latest track Game Over, which features Selah on vocals.

Rob Kelly is probably Irelands best known emcee due to his longevity, talent and stature in the game both here and abroad. Hailing from Wexford, he began back in 2002 when he appeared on Wes D’arcy’s 2FM late night show, The Big Smoke where he would freestyle live on air. From this he progressed with his skills entering emcee battles and in 2003 he won the national championships which were sponsored by Universal Records. It was at this time when he started to concentrate on recording and hooked up with Irish producer, Mike Donnelly. In 2004 Rob released his first mixtape The Kellection to great acclaim and has to date released a total of four top quality mixtapes. He has also had some acclaim overseas in the States, something that no outsider has ever managed easily in this genre and even has a track Bubblin’ featuring Memphis Bleek, who was signed to Jay-Z’s Roc-a-Fella Records at the time.

Game Over is produced by longtime collaborator Mike Donnelly from Bray in Co. Wicklow and features Selah, a female singer from the U.K who is signed to Sony Records and who Rob has collaborated with in the past.

The track begins with a down-spun synth sound to introduce a nice solid and sturdy military type beat that holds the track together. This is then laced with a lightly distorted but solid guitar stab in sync with the snare which gives the whole track a forward driving energy. The use of a computerised sounding electronic synth on certain parts of the track give an added but effective addition to the beat, going from a controlled arpeggiated sound on the verse to a demented and distorted one for the hook and it all sits well on top of an underlying, hard, kick driven bassline.

With the beat after setting the pace, Kells is in with his stand-out, clear lyrics and tight flow which has become his trademark

Your now rocking with the eighteenth letter. Bring it to the fifteenth letter

Now wait for the 2nd one, my people on the front line like its lebanon

My girl want to leave, I get a better one, I don’t be begging em, I just beckon em

So tell me wot you reckon hun, I reckon this jam done when the record spun

The introduction of the hook is perfect as it slides in and paces Rob’s demanding verse, as Selah breaks it down for those willing to test

Game Over, I thought I told you this was done

Thought I told you, when you first heard me speaking tongues

I don’t understand why you are continuing to try,

    Game Over, Game Over

As the track progresses so does his flow and Kelly runs with the energy as it builds, proclaiming his seniority and status in the game with syllable and phonetic run offs that subliminally throw jabs at those that try label him as commercial

Religious imagery tatts prevent vicious attacks

cross on my shoulder, but the devil still on my back

virgin mary on my arm, dirty bird in the sack

a beautiful paradox that I spit on the track

As always Kelly drops flawless flow, utilising pauses and double-timing to showcase his mastery of the track. A complete and solid unit from beginning to end; the production as it builds and pushes, Kells’ rhymes and punchy delivery to the subtle introduction of the hook and how it softens the edge between verses, all make this track a powerhouse that is fit for any album feature.

Next up for Wexford’s finest is his debut album which he is continually working on, although no release date as of yet. He is also constantly working with artists both here and abroad and will be dropping some more bangers along the way to hold us over until the album is ready.
